Saddle choice & cycling posture
The right Zadelman saddle depends on your cycling posture, not your bike type. The Zadelman Tour suits a forward-leaning posture (around 45°) on trekking bikes and sportier hybrids. The Zadelman Modern suits a slightly forward-leaning posture (around 60°) on most e-bikes and city bikes. The Zadelman Classic suits an upright posture (around 90°) on classic city bikes, Dutch-style bikes and cargo bikes. Take the Zadelman Saddle Scan for personal advice.
For most e-bikes, the Zadelman Modern is the best choice. The Modern is designed for a slightly forward-leaning seating position and longer distances, which matches how most e-bike riders cycle. If you sit fully upright on your e-bike, the Classic is a better match.
On a Dutch-style or cargo bike you cycle upright. The Zadelman Classic was designed for this posture, with a rear suspension for extra cushioning and an optional nose spring for a classic look.
The difference lies in the cycling posture each model is designed for. The Tour is the slimmest model, made for an active forward-leaning posture. The Modern is wider than the Tour and suits a slightly forward-leaning posture. The Classic is the widest model with rear suspension, made for an upright seating position.
Yes, a Zadelman fits virtually any bike. Modern bikes and saddles use a universal seat clamp, which means your current saddle is usually easy to replace. If in doubt, send a side photo of your bike to service@zadelman.com.
For long rides, the Zadelman Tour and Modern are the most popular choices. Which model suits you depends on your cycling posture during long rides.
Materials & construction
A leather bicycle saddle supports the sit bones rather than the surrounding tissue. With gel or foam saddles, the sit bones sink into the soft material, shifting pressure to the soft tissue and causing irritation. Leather breathes better, dissipates body heat faster and shapes itself to the rider.
Zadelman saddles are made of 4 to 5 mm thick naturally tanned leather of European origin. The frame is galvanised spring steel with a powder coating, and all mounting components are stainless steel.
Zadelman bicycle saddles are designed and produced entirely in-house in Oldenzaal, the Netherlands.
The Zadelman Tour measures 26.5 × 16 × 8 cm (l × w × h) and weighs 540 grams. The Zadelman Modern measures 26.5 × 18.5 × 6.8 cm (l × w × h) and weighs 600 grams. The Zadelman Classic comes in two versions, both measuring 26.5 × 21.5 × 10 cm (l × w × h). The version with rear suspension only weighs 900 grams. The version with the additional nose spring is 120 grams heavier.
Breaking in & comfort
A Zadelman saddle shapes to the rider within 150 to 200 kilometres. During this period the saddle may still feel stiff. After that it adapts to your sit bones and becomes more comfortable than a gel or foam saddle. A Zadelman continues to shape gradually beyond this point. The exact length of the break-in period varies from person to person.
Yes, in the first kilometres a leather saddle feels firmer than a gel or foam saddle. This is normal and part of the material. During the first 150 to 200 kilometres the leather shapes itself to the sit bones and the firmness decreases.
Many cyclists actually experience less saddle pain on a Zadelman, because the leather supports the sit bones rather than the soft tissue. During the break-in period the saddle takes some getting used to.
Leather is a naturally breathable material and dissipates body heat faster than plastic or gel. This keeps the saddle comfortable even in warm weather.
Maintenance
Maintain your Zadelman saddle with Zadelman saddle cream and keep it tensioned with a long Allen key. A long Allen key can be ordered with your saddle. To protect against rain, the Zadelman saddle cover is available. All three are also available together as a maintenance kit.
Treat a leather saddle with saddle cream about once or twice a year, depending on how many kilometres you ride and under what conditions. The cream can be applied to the top of the saddle, but also to the underside. The latter is recommended because the cream then penetrates the fibres more deeply.
The tensioning system sits on the underside of the saddle and is operated with a long Allen key. Tension the saddle when you notice the leather has stretched and the support has decreased. It may already be necessary after the first rides to give the saddle a slight tension. Most of the stretch occurs early on. Tighten by half a turn at a time and check that the saddle keeps its shape. Never overtighten or force it.
Cycling in the rain is no problem for a leather saddle. It only becomes an issue when water sits on the top for longer periods, for example when the bike is parked outside in the rain without cover. The leather then has time to absorb the moisture, which can affect its shape and reduce support. So always try to park your bike under cover, or use a saddle cover. If the saddle does get wet, let it dry at room temperature and then treat it with saddle cream. Any blisters and discolouration from rain will fade on their own.
